Carl James “Jim” Gettys

Funeral service for Carl James “Jim” Gettys, 93, of Thornville, was January 9, 2009, at Bope Thomas Funeral Home, Somerset, with the Rev. John Edwards officiating. Burial was in Zion Ridge Cemetery.

Carl died at 8 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 6, 2009, at Autumn Healthcare of Somerset. Carl was born April 23, 1915, in Thornville Ziontown to the late Franklin Augustis “Gus” and Della Ann (Eis) Gettys.

Carl retired from South Central Power Co. in 1986 as a meter tester. He was also a farmer from 1940 to 1954 on the Gettyses’ home farm near Bruno. He and his father were fur buyers for many years. He was an avid baseball fan and an excellent pitcher, playing semipro ball until the age of 40. He graduated from Thornville High School in 1934 and was an all-county basketball player.

He is survived by his son, Wes (Harriette) Gettys, of Thornville; two grandchildren, Jody (Debbie) Gettys, and Robin (Matt) LaRue, all of Thornville; five great-grandchildren, April and Dawn Gettys, and Ethan, Chad and Katie LaRue; and two sisters, Sarah Bever, of Columbus, and Phyllis (Marlyn) Courson, of Mount Vernon.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 72 years, Julia Ann (Hager) Gettys; three brothers, Paul, Forest and Maurice “Mose” Gettys; and seven sisters, Betty, Anah, Irene, Beulah, Louise, Helen and Pearl.
