Betty Jean Grant




Betty Jean Grant, age 88, passed away at her residence in Buckeye Lake, with family by her side in the early morning hours of December 19, 2014. She was born September 24, 1926, in Hillsboro, OH, the daughter of the late William Carey and Hazel (Gossett) Walker, and lived the majority of her life in Fredericktown, OH.

Mrs. Grant was part of the last class of the Army Cadet Nurse Training Corps and received her nursing degree from the Jewish Hospital of Cincinnati, School of Nursing, September 4, 1948. The majority of her 41 year career as an R.N. was spent tending to the sickly and mentally disabled at the Ohio State Sanatorium (Tuberculosis) Hospital, later the Mt. Vernon Developmental Center, where she retired on December 31, 1989, after 36 years of devoted service. She came out of retirement briefly in 1991 to care for the elderly at a local nursing home. She spent summers in the late 50’s and early 60’s working with her husband as they traveled to various fairs throughout the region with his Stockman & Showman Supply business, and was instrumental in managing and maintaining the KOA Campground of Mt. Gilead, OH, owned and operated by her husband and brother-in-law from 1967-1969. She was a long-time member of the Palmyra Church of Christ in Fredericktown, OH, and Heath Church of Christ in her later years.

She is survived by three children, Lisa (Jeffrey) Keyes of Buckeye Lake, Marline (Dave) Smalley and Marjorie (Jerry) Styers both of Mt. Vernon; four grandchildren, Briana Keyes of Buckeye Lake, Justin (Lisa) Grant of Escondido, CA, Maureen (Dave) Hall also of Mt. Vernon, and Maureen K. Gates of South Riding, VA; two great grandchildren, Summer Grant and Alexis Edwards; a brother, Max (Blanche) Walker of Mason, OH; and many nieces and nephews, their children and grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Merle H. Grant in 2002 after 47 years of marriage; her son, Lawrence E. Grant; two sisters, Doris Elaine Walker, and Shirley (Walker) Schraw; a nephew Harold E. (Gene) Schraw; and a grand-nephew Jason S. Schraw.

Funeral services were December 27, 2014, at the Turner & Son Funeral Home in Hillsboro, OH, with Dave Mason of the Heath Church of Christ officiating. Burial followed in the Hillsboro Cemetery.
