Altheus Oscar “Al” Wing, Jr., 86, of Harbor Hills, passed away on June 9, 2014. As his wife Linda said, “He was a man of many hats.” Whether you knew him as A.O., Big Al, Grandpa, or Great-Grandpa, he was unforgettable.

As an avid Buckeye supporter of both football and basketball, it was not unusual for him to fly home from vacations to attend games. One of Al’s core beliefs was service to his community. He was drive chairman as well as Past-President of Charity Newsies, an organization he was deeply committed to. He was Past President and International President of Sertoma and Commodore of the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Altheus and Marcella Wing; and his wife, Linda Underwood Wing.
Al and Linda were parents of four children: daughters, Charlene “Cece” (Warren) Robbins of Delaware, Eve (Michael) Hush of Pickerington, and Marcella “Patty” (Norman) Maddex of Woodinville, Washington; and son, Dr. Keith “Rocky” Wing (Claudia), D.D.S. of Newark; nine grandchildren, Dr. Barton (Dr. Karah) Robbins of Cincinnati, Courtney (Benjamin) Rosensweet of Cincinnati, Michael and Lisa Hush of Pickerington, Kyle and Curtis Maddex (fiancée, Amber Green) of Woodinville, Washington, Marcus, Christopher, and Anthony Wing of Newark; and great-grandson, Connor Lee Rosensweet of Cincinnati. Al believed that family was everything. He instilled in his children a strong work ethic and sense of service. Al and Linda attended all their children’s and grandchildren’s activities. Big Al was the one yelling from the stands or giving advice to the coaches “who didn’t know what they were doing.” He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Friends may call from 3-8 p.m. on Thursday, June 19, 2014 at O.R. WOODYARD CO. South Chapel, 1346 South High Street, Columbus. A service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2014 at 9:30 a.m. at O.R. WOODYARD CO. South Chapel, with interment following at Glen Rest Memorial Estate, Reynoldsburg.
Al was a lifelong supporter of service organizations and the family would appreciate memorial contributions be made to Charity Newsies.
The family would like to especially thank Karen Benner, the personal caretaker for over six years, the doctors of Mount Carmel East, staff of Kindred Rehabilitation and Transitional Care, Newark, Ohio, and Hospice of Central Ohio (Licking County). In addition, the family would like to thank all of their friends for their support and prayers. As Al would say, “Family is everything.” We realize now that you measure a family’s love not over days and weeks but over a lifetime and into the next generation.
