Agreement protects county, township roads during dam project

We would like to update the Walnut Township residents on a very important mission recently completed. Township trustees, in conjunction with the Fairfield County Engineer’s Office and County Commissioners, have completed a Road Use Maintenance Agreement (RUMA) between the township, county and Ohio Department of Natural Resources in regards to the Buckeye Lake Dam Reconstruction Project.

The purpose of this contractual agreement is to protect township and county roadways and bridges during the construction project. The agreement outlines the procedures and actions required of ODNR to repair, maintain and reconstruct the haul roadways so that they will be returned to their original condition after the completion of the project. The township and county videotaped roads this summer to document their condition prior to the start of the project. In addition, ODNR is required to post a $1.6 million performance bond.

The Walnut Township Trustees appreciate the cooperation and guidance of County Engineer Jeremiah Upp, and his staff for their assistance in obtaining this agreement. This contract is a vital agreement to protect local dollars and assets.

Walnut Township Trustees are attempting to forward as much information to the public as possible in regards to the ongoing schedule of construction events. Information will be posted on the Walnut Township Facebook account plus website as information is received. Any individual may also request to be added to the ODNR notifications list in order to receive notices at the same time it is sent to the township & other entities by contacting Ian Nickey at or 614/265-6755. Township residents are always welcome to attend any regularly scheduled township trustees meeting on the first Tuesday of each month at 7:00 p.m. in 2016. You may also contact us directly if you have questions.
