End of an Era

Two downtown Thornville buildings razed, posts stolen

THORNVILLE– Downtown Thornville will never appear the same after two of its buildings came down last week. The old Thornville hardware store and an adjacent building were finally demolished after prolonged debate over whether to take advantage of a $60,000 donation to destroy the buildings, which were in disrepair, or try to save them for their historical value. The donation […]

Analysis: Disfunctional Buckeye Lake EMS needs change NOW

BUCKEYE LAKE – Mayor Rick Baker took a couple of baby steps Monday night toward addressing the well-documented failures of the village’s EMS program. He named four of the five members of an advisory committee. They are: • Hebron Mayor Clifford Mason who has served as a full-time fire chief for several central Ohio fire departments; • Buckeye Lake resident […]

Mayor appoints fire department committee

BUCKEYE LAKE – Mired in controversy following an in-depth study by The Beacon revealing large gaps in the department’s staffing schedule that affect response times, Buckeye Lake Mayor Rick Baker announced during Monday night’s council meeting that he would appoint an independent committee to monitor and advise the department’s operations. He also issued several administrative directives to Buckeye Lake Fire […]

Why have so many residents chosen apathy?

Editor: On Monday, I finally made it to a Buckeye Lake Council meeting after forgetting to go (probably subconsciously) to the last four. I wasn’t surprised – just a lot of examples of officials not doing their jobs. The first one was wet t-shirt judge, I mean Mayor, Rick Baker who announced that he is forming a five-person committee to […]

Committee: Too little, too late

Editor: At the 9/10 Buckeye Lake Village Council meeting, Mayor Baker finally addressed some issues surrounding the fire department. I applaud his move to appoint an advisory committee, however, it’s too little too late. Shortly after Baker took office in January 2010, I pointed out some deficiencies in the department and suggested he replace Chief Leindecker. Baker made no commitments, […]

Reject the fire levy until changes are made

Editor: I don’t know why certain Buckeye Lake Village Council members and Mayor Baker are not listening to village residents. We are not criticizing the volunteers at the fire department but we do have concerns about the fire chief. HE is the problem. All we got from Monday’s meeting is that they are forming a committee. But what are they […]

Thanks to ‘One and Done’ supporters

Editor: We would like to take time to thank the people who contributed to our small Labor Day get-together. All you folks had a hand in making the “One and Done” party a huge success again: All of our neighbors on Lieb’s Island; Walnut Township; Ohio Department of Natural Resources; Personal Touch Party Rentals; The Dave Clark Band; Alex and […]

Your outpouring of love and support has meant so much. A special thanks to the folks of the Hebron Christian Church who organized and […]
