Walnut Township Schools Superintendent Ron Thornton, left, updates school board members Monday morning on the construction of the district's first ever track. From left to right, are board members Robert Slater II, Vince Popo, President David Brookover and Faye Whittaker; and District Treasurer Kirk Grandy. The group is standing on the track's asphalt base. Installation of its rubberized surface was expected to begin later Monday. If weather cooperates, the new track should be ready to use by Monday, August 24. Board members unanimously agreed before their tour to name the new track in honor of long-time track coach Ken Keener. The facility will be named the Ken Kenner Track and Field Complex. A dedication ceremony is set for half-time at next Friday's (Aug. 28) home football game with Fairfield Christian Academy. A field sports area for long jump, pole vault, high jump, shot put and discus competiton has been constructed at the north end of the football field. The new facilities will allow Millersport to host its first ever track meets. Beacon photo by Charles Prince.
