It was a three-peat as state champions for the Lakewood Lady Lancers softball team in June. A move up to Division II and the loss of star pitcher Alissa Birkhimer didn’t faze the backto back Division III champions. Junior Alyssa Patznick took over pitching duties. Senior catcher Caitlin Houk summed it up best with, “Tradition doesn’t graduate.” The No. 4 ranked Lancers beat No. 3 LaGrange Keystone 8-0 in the regional semi-final. No. 2 Greenville fell to the Lady Lancers 5- 4 in the state semi-final. The 28- 4 Lancers took on 30-1 and No. 1 ranked Poland Seminary in the state final. The future looks bright as Freshman Kelsi Thompson demonstrated Lakewood’s depth with a solo home run in the final. Her homer turned out to be the only run in the game, giving the Lancers a 1-0 victory and their third straight state championship. 1p1.jpg
