Karlheinz Hooper enjoys a picnic lunch with two friends last Thursday at his parents’ grave in Baltimore Cemetery. The picnic started last year on the anniversary of his mother’s death. Katharina Hooper was a German nurse who met Sgt. William Hooper after World War II. They ended up in Lancaster where Katharina became a mainstay of the Fairfield County Republican Party. Katharina loved parties and Karlheinz’s friends believed the annual picnic would help him grieve. He lives in an adult group home in Carroll. Beacon photo by Charles Prince.
