Free radon tests available
NEWARK – Licking County has the highest average indoor radon levels in the state of Ohio, and high levels of radon can pose significant health risks.
“I would like to encourage all residents to test their homes for radon,” said Health Commissioner Joe Ebel. “Due to the fact that you can’t see or smell radon, people tend to downplay the health effects and ignore the possibility that there might be a silent killer in their homes.”
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the U.S. after smoking and the leading cause of lung cancer among nonsmokers. It is estimated that 70% of the homes in Licking County have elevated levels of radon.
