The Silk Scarf Project: Dyeing with Plants - Saturday, August 17, 10 a.m. - noon (register by August 14) and Saturday, August 24, 10 a.m. - 11 a.m. (register by August), Zand Education Center Greenhouse Classroom , $30/$20 members. Join us for this creative work shop where we use a primitive pounding technique to extract dyes from plants onto silk, resulting in colorful scarves that are sure to be the envy of your friends. Our ingredients include plant flowers, leaves, berries, roots and other parts. After a soaking period, you’ll expose one-of-a-kind masterpieces. If you own a rubber mallet, please bring it with you.
Little Buckeye Imagination Sessions: Watch the World Go By on a Wagon Tour - Wednesday, August 21, 2 p.m., Visitors Center deck, Free. Learn with a group as the creative educators at The Dawes Arboretum bring families closer to the wonders of the natural world. These programs keep the body moving and brain exercising as science is combined with games, crafts, stories and music and is designed for children between ages 3 and 10. Registration is not required.
Music, Movie and Brews in the Garden- Saturday, Aug. 24, 6:30 p.m. Start the evening with the Spruce Campbells and rock out to intricate fuzz-pop with catchy hooks and lush, layered arrangements that defines this Columbus band’s sound. Afterwards, enjoy plenty of laughs and lighthearted entertainment under the stars as The Arboretum features the 1997 comedy film: ‘Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery’! Don’t forget to bring your pillow and blanket, favorite movie snacks and visit the beer garden featuring Ohio microbrews! It’s groovy, baby, yeah! *This movie is rated PG-13 for nudity, sex-related dialogue and humor. Visitors are encouraged to bring chairs, blankets and picnic lunches to these free concerts. In the case of inclement weather, performances will be held inside the Visitors Center. FREE, in the All Seasons Garden.
An Orthopteran Symphony: The Songs of Insects with Jim McCormac, Saturday, Aug. 24, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. Join guest presenter Jim McCormac, from the Ohio Division of Wildlife, for this fascinating and informative program as he delves into the intriguing world of singing insects, often heard but seldom seen. Following the indoor program, take a nocturnal field trip throughout the grounds in search of these charismatic songsters. Learn to recognize many of the common species by sound and have an opportunity to catch some of the singers for closer inspection. Unlike other Night Hike programs, bring a flashlight! Meet at Red Barn Area, $15/$10 members

Queen Of The Lake II Tour Boat - Buckeye Lake. Public tours for the season on beautiful Buckeye Lake aboard the Queen of the Lake tour boat. Tours depart every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., boarding at Buckeye Lake State Park North Shore in the Village of Buckeye Lake off Ohio 79. Cost is $10 per person with children under 5 years free. The one-hour tour includes Buckeye Lake history toldbya alocalvolunteer. Reservations are not needed. The boat has a sun roof and hold 40 passengers. American Legion 4-Man Scramble Golf Outing - Thornville. The Thornville American Legion is sponsoring a 4-man scramble golf outing on Saturday, Sept. 7, at White Tail Ridge Golf Course. Tee off is at 9 a.m. Prizes include a new Polaris Ranger for the first hole-in-one on #7. Call White Tail Ridge at 740-246- 8429 to sign up by August 16. Proceeds benefit the American Legion’s local charities.
Cruisin’ on the Commons - Millersport. The monthly car show returns from 5 - 8 p.m. on Friday, August 16, at Sweet Corn Festival grounds. Registration is from 5 - 7 p.m. Cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome. Door prizes, 50/50 and trivia games.
2013 Dog Paddle - Heath. Bring your ‘best friend’ for a fun evening from 4 - 8 p.m. on Sunday, August 18, in the Activity Pool and Lazy River at the Heath City Water Park. Cost is $10 per dog at the door which includes two free adult admissions. Must provide proof of current dog license and rabies vaccination. Proceeds benefit Licking County Animal Shelter - Spay & Neuter.
Thorn Township Firefighter’s Association Golf Scramble - Thornville. The annual golf scramble is set for 9 a.m. on Saturday, August 24, at White Tail Ridge Golf Course. This is a four-man best ball scramble. Cost is $200 per team including lunch and door prizes.
