It’s VFW scholarship time

Editor:

Once again, the Ladies Auxiliary to the Veterans of Foreign Wars is announcing the themes for the VFW’s premier scholarship programs. Each year, more than 50,000 high school students compete for more than $2.3 million in scholarships and incentives in the Voice of Democracy Program and more than 125,000 students in grades 6-8 compete for a $5000 top prize and trip to Washington, DC in The Patriot’s Pen competition.

Voice of Democracy is a patriotic audio essay competition with a theme this year of “Why I’m Optimistic About Our Nation’s Future”. This is an original 3-5 minute essay on cassette or CD. All high school and home schooled students are invited to enter. For more information, contact me at the number below for an application and a set of rules.

Patriot’s Pen is an original written essay completion which gives students in grades 6-8 an opportunity to write, expressing their views on democracy. This year’s theme for Patriot’s Pen is “What Patriotism Means to Me”. Students in grade 6-8 and home schooled students are encouraged to participate. For more information, contact me at the number below for an application and a set of rules.

The deadline for both contests is 5 p.m. on Nov.1, 2013. We must have entries by then for local judging so the winners can move on to the District level by the next day. There is a lot of scholarship money to be awarded on all four levels of competition. If teachers or parents would like information, please contact me in the evenings at 740-929- 2617. God Bless Our Veterans and God Bless America!
