Volunteers keep Millersport Pool open

Editor:

The Millersport Pool opened a day earlier than expected for a one day “get to know the pool” event. This was possible thanks to the hard work by the pool staff and some special people that I need to recognize.

I want to especially thank Lesa Brown and her family for spending an extraordinary amount of time taking care of all the small details. Bob and Shelley Price recruited the Millersport Fire Department to help paint the pool. Village Council member Gary Matheny and Nicole Matheny helped with planting flowers and hauling materials. Lloyd Purvis repaired plumbing leaks and installed a hot water tank. Steve Harlow poured concrete and finished the area above the leak.

Thanks to Ian Skipper (the Banner Man) for making the banners. A big thanks to our banner sponsors: Whetstone Medical Clinic, Big O, Bower & Sons, Little Laker Football, Child Care Express and my wife Debbi Popo (Carleton Realty).

Gary Haney and Mark Fry have updated and improved the sand volleyball court. They are organizing volleyball events. Contact me at the village office if you are interested in playing. Mark has been cleaning up the pool’s lighting system and his work will save the pool money on its utility bills.

Stephanie Little (Sammy J’s Deli) and Faye Whitaker (Olde Canal Restaurant) have been financial lifesavers by each selling 100 tickets for the summer meat (Bower & Sons) drawing fundraiser.

I can always count on the Lions Club and its members to bail me out. Roy Brewer spent a day welding and making sure the diving boards were safe. Ed Otte and Dave Holtz helped with a phone pole that the pool needed for lights.

Finally, I want to express my utmost gratitude to Mike Washburn, Bill Yates, Gilbert Arnold, Tom Boso, Mike Bergum and John Wood. Most of us have no idea of how difficult and time consuming it is to open the pool, particularly one as old as Millersport’s. These guys put up with my ideas and with a little arm twisting and some ribbing will make me look good and help get the pool open on time.

This is a great place to live and raise children. Thank You to all of you who make a difference.
