Dawes Arboretum - Ohio 13, three miles north of I-70.

Plant Sale & Garden Fair- Saturday, May 18, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Enhance your landscape with unique plants cultivated by horticulture experts! The Spring Plant Sale & Garden Fair offers the opportunity to find some rare gems you can’t find anywhere else. The Arboretum showcases some of its favorite woody varieties which have been researched on their own grounds. Merchants and professionals offer wares and services in all areas of gardening, landscaping and home décor. Choose from an assortment of annuals, perennials, herbs and vegetables. Our plant experts are always on hand to help you choose the best plants for your outdoor spaces. Wagons are available to transport your treasures. Lunch is available for purchase. Proceeds from the sale benefit The Arboretum’s collection and grounds.

The Visitors Center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays and holidays. For more information visit www.dawes arb.org

Queen Of The Lake II Tour Boat - Buckeye Lake. Public tours begin Saturday, May 4, for the season on beautiful Buckeye Lake aboard the Queen of the Lake tour boat. Tours depart every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m., boarding at Buckeye Lake State Park North Shore in the Village of Buckeye Lake off Ohio 79. Cost is $10 per person with children under 5 years free. The one-hour tour includes Buckeye Lake history told by a a local volunteer. Reservations are not needed. The boat has a sun roof and hold 40 passengers. Buckeye Lake Carp Fest - North Shore Boat Ramp, Buckeye Lake. Help Buckeye Lake for Tomorrow reduce the lake’s excessive carp population. More than $3,000 in cash prizes will be awarded for carp caught during the second Annual Carp Fest June 7-19. Registration is just $5 per fisherman. Pre-register from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays at Z’s Village Market on Ohio 79 in Buckeye Lake Village. On-site registration begins at 3 p.m. on Friday, June 7. Cash prizes will be awarded for the most carp by weight caught over the 48-hour tournament and for the largest carp by weight caught during the same time. Daily cash prizes will also be awarded. There are separate cash prizes for youth (under 16), teams (two members) and families (up to four fishing and no more than two adults). For more information visit www.buckeyelakefortomorrow.org. Cruisin’ on the Commons - Millersport. The monthly car show returns from 5 - 8 p.m. on Friday, May 17, at Sweet Corn Festival grounds. Registration is from 5 - 7 p.m. Cars, trucks and motorcycles are welcome. Door prizes, 50/50 and trivia games.

Jazz Dinner Dance - Baltimore. The Liberty Union Music Boosters is hosting its annual Jazz Dinner Dance beginning at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at the Christ UM Family Life Center. The event will be catered by J. Gumbo’s, and music will be provided by the LU Jazz Band. Individual tickets are $12 and tables of 8 may be purchased for $90. Tickets are available at J. Perry County Art Walk- Somerset. The Perry County Historical and Cultural Arts Society is hosting the 4th annual Perry County Art Walk from 4 - 8 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, on Somerset square. There will be 35+ local artists, as well as artisan food and music. The newly formed Somerset Artists’ Co-Op will be hosting a ceramics competition, potters wheel demonstrations, and will be offering Culinary Art creations by local Chef Jamie Smith. Come for dinner and enjoy a taste of the Arts on the square in Somerset!

Denison Observatory Open House - Granville. The Denison Department of Physics and Astronomy will host an open house at Swasey Observatory (300 Chapel Drive) from 9 to 11 pm on Saturday, May 18, if skies are clear. In addition to planned observations of Saturn and the moon, Denison professors and astronomy students will be on hand to locate other celestial objects as time permits. Photo Workshop - William C. Kraner Nature Center, Newark. Come meet and photograph some birds of prey and mammals up close in a natural setting from 8 - 11 a.m. on Sunday, May 19. Space is limited to 25 people so hurry to reserve your spot by calling 740-967-8320 or emailing mvs@ohionature.org. Point and shoot cameras are welcome as are SLR with a lens in the 70-200 mm range recommended. Cost $50 per person.

Volunteer Orientation - William C. Kraner Nature Center, Newark. Come explore the different volunteer opportunities that are offered at Ohio Nature Education from 1:30 - 3:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 19. You must be 16 years old, have transportation and access to email.

A House Divided: Civil War Reenactment and Living History Weekend - Ohio Village, Columbus. Ohio Village kicks off its summer season May 25 and 26, with the heat, smoke, and noise of the Civil War complete with cavalry, battles, gun, and cannon demonstrations and Union and Confederate troops. Hours are Saturday, May 25: 10 am- 5pm and Sunday, May 26, noon- 5 pm. Admission (includes village and museum): $10/Adults, $9/ Seniors, $5/Children 6-12, Free/ Children 5 and under. 15-Year Anniversary Celebration - The Buckeye Lake Historical Society, Buckeye Lake, Join the Buckeye Lake Historical Society and Museum for a 15 year anniversay celebration event at the Buckeye Lake Musuem from 2 - 6 p.m.. on Sunday, May 26. Over 40,000 visitors have walked the halls of history since it opened in 1998. Author and historian Donna Braig will be on hand to sign her new book, My Buckeye Lake Memories just released in April. Past board members along with members and friends will be on hand to commemorate this historic day. Guests will be able to record their own memories of Buckeye Lake for the new DVD, The Playground of Ohio. Stop by for refreshments, door prizes and remembering the past. National Road Yard Sale Days - US 40. Shop the 2013 Super Weekend of Yard Sales on Friday, May 31 & Saturday, June 1 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Some yard sales will begin Wednesday, May 29, in Brownsville and Hebron. Everything from antiques, furniture, children’s items, baked goods & bargains galore! Thirtytwo miles of roadside treasures from Reynoldsburg to Gratiot in Licking County.

Heisey Wind Ensemble Big Band - Newark. The Heisey Wind Ensemble Big Band presents the final concert of the 2012-13 season at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, May 18, at The Reese Center at Ohio State University Newark/COTC, with a program of music by the great George Gershwin. Appearing as guest trombonist and vocalist will be Jim Masters. A current member of the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and a lecturer at The Ohio State University, Jim toured professionally with the Buddy Rich Big Band and the Widespread Jazz Orchestra. Dark Star Jubilee - Thornville. The Dark Star Jubilee returns Memorial Day Weekend, May 24-26, to Legend Valley in Thornville. Hosted and curated by world-renowned Grateful Dead tribute band, Dark Star Orchestra, the Jubilee also features members of The Dead in their own bands, the Mickey Hart Band and Donna Jean Band.
