Classics on the Canal
We didn’t get it last Saturday, creating perfect conditions for Boats on the Canal and the Cruising’ on the Commons Car Show.
The star of the show arrived late thanks to a blown trailer tire and sticky trailer brakes. Jack Beatley’s 1917 Hickman Sea Sled stayed on its trailer in front of the American Legion. That made it easy to see its inverted vee hull design which has been called one of the greatest innovations of the 20th Century. Visitors could also see its twin 30-inch bronze props that were designed to pierce the water surface to reduce drag.
His Sea Sled is the only twinengine one left in the world. It is driven by two-150 HP engines. The open utility style boat seats five up front and three in the back.
Saturday’s show was its first show in more than 10 years. Beatley purchased it last fall. It may get wet this summer.
