John Joseph Hammel

John Joseph Hammel, age 92, of Millersport, died on March 14, 2012, at St. John’s Hospice in Springfield, Illinois.

He was born October 19, 1919, in Joliet, Illinois, the son of Joseph Augustus and Henrietta (Hattie Hansel) Hammel. He married Geraldine Griffin in 1943 and she preceded him in death in 2002. Two of three sisters, Wilhelmine McCarley and Genevieve Harms also preceded him in death.

Mr. Hammel was a graduate of Joliet Junior College and served in the Pacific during WWII with the Army 888 Signal Corp. He lived much of his adult life in Columbus, and retired from Ohio Bell Telephone Company in 1986 where he was an instructor in installation and repair. He was an adult leader with the Boy Scouts, attained the 3rd Degree with the Knights of Columbus and was a member of Corpus Christi Catholic Church where he was an officer in the Holy Name Society, the PTA and the parish credit union.

After retirement, he lived in Millersport, and was active in the American Legion and volunteered at the Fairfield Medical Center. Up until his death, he enjoyed playing cards with the Buckeye Lake Seniors, Hebron Club 55 and Millersport Seniors. John is a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Buckeye Lake.

He is survived by son, John W. (Ruthanne) Hammel; granddaughter, Carol (Dennis) Whitehead; great grandchildren, Kathryn Ann and Sean Joseph Whitehead, all of Springfield, Illinois; one sister, Cecelia Dollinger of Channahon, Illinois; and numerous cousins, nephews and nieces.

Visitation and viewing will be at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Buckeye Lake, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. on Saturday, March 24, 2012, followed by Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30 a.m. with a luncheon immediately after the service. All are invited to attend and celebrate John’s life.

Private burial will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Lockbourne.
