MILLERSPORT – Players, parents and fans celebrated a very successful varsity boys’ basketball season at the March 15 Lakers Winter Sports Banquet.

Varsity boys’ coach Kirk Grandy said the 17-6 team met all three goals it set for the season. That included returning to the coliseum which they did by reaching the district final. The Lakers fell to Columbus Africentric who are competing in the state tournament this week.

“They are true team players,” Grandy said. There were no playing time complaints from parents or players.

The celebration was bittersweet as varsity assistant Bob Weldon retired after 29 years coaching at Millersport. “This has truly been a blessing,” he said. “ I could thank people for two hours. We (he and Grandy) are very fortunate to have wives who support us.” Both wives were given purple and gold roses.

Players garnered quite a few individual awards. Lakers received five out of the 24 Mid- State League boys’ basketball awards.

• Seniors Alton Frizzell and Zach Maughmer were named 1st Team All-MSL;

• Seniors Cody Kraner and Rob Weldon were named 2nd Team All-MSL; and

• Senior Michael Popo was named Honorable Mention All -MSL.

Four players were recognized by sportswriters in the Central District:
