JACKSONTOWN – The Dawes Arboretum needs you! Dawes Education Director Jenny Pope said at least 30 volunteers are needed for its annual Maple Syrup Madness event. “ We need volunteers to help run the evaporator and help us with tours,” she said. “We’ll make you perfectly comfortable.” Pope said volunteer training day is Feb. 24, 1 to 4 p.m., when Dawes personnel will explain to the volunteers what they’ll be doing and educate them about the about the process of creating maple syrup.
Maple Syrup Madness takes place from Feb. 25 through March 10. There’s a guided public tour of Dawes’ maple syrup production Saturdays at 2 p.m., but there are many private tours scheduled by appointment throughout the weekdays.
“It’s quite an effort,” said Pope. “ The more volunteers we can have, the better. It’s a lot of fun.” She encouraged volunteers to bring hot dogs and marshmallows for the sugar shack’s roaring fireplace. Volunteers will have an opportunity to take part in a tradition that stretches back to the 1960s. Anyone interested in volunteering should call Volunteer Coordinator Jennilyn Lowe at (740) 323-2355.
Maple tree tapping begins Feb. 21 and Pope said Dawes has about a quarter of the volunteers it could really use for the entire event. She appreciates all who have agreed to volunteer thus far and hopes many more people will by Feb. 24. “We never have enough volunteers,” said Pope.
