Fast and furious football: Sheridan versus Dover

Beacon photos by Charles Prince. Beacon photos by Charles Prince. DOVER – Sheridan High School Generals traveled to Dover last Friday to meet the Tornadoes in a Division III, Region 11 quarterfinal.

The 9-1 Generals were seeded seventh while the 9-1 Tornadoes were the #2 seed with the homefield advantage.

The first half was an offensive frenzy with Sheridan scoring quickly on their first possession. The Generals would score 21 straight points in the first quarter, but Dover doubled that in the second quarter., scoring 21 points in less than two and a half minutes. Dover held a 49-33 lead at halftime.

Sheridan found some defense in the locker room, closing the gap to 49-47 in the third quarter. Trading touchdowns lead to a 55-53 margin with just seconds left in the third quarter. Dover then returned a Sheridan punt for a touchdown making it a 61-53 game. The Tornadoes scored once more for a 68-53 lead and held the Generals scoreless for the rest of the game.

The scoring total was the highest for the first weekend of tournament play. Dover takes on 11-0 Minerva this Friday and Sheridan finishes its fine season at 9-2.
