Paul Parks Mechling

Paul Parks Mechling was born on April 9, 1919 on the Mechling family farm near Glenford, to Fred S. and Bessie Parks Mechling and passed away on Sunday, October 23, 2011.

Paul graduated from Glenford High School in 1937 and received his Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s of Science Degrees in Agricultural Education from The Ohio State University. He taught Vocational Agriculture at Westville, Versailles and Lancaster Schools. He served as farm loan and public relations officer for Fairfield National Bank from 1959 to 1966. He served as director of adult and continuing education for Ohio University-Lancaster from 1966 to 1979. In 1982, he was elected as State Representative (91st District) and served five terms in the Ohio House of Representatives, retiring in 1992. In 1993, he was appointed to the Ohio Exposition Commission and served through 1998.

Paul married Annabelle Wallace on July 29, 1945, in Woodstock, Ohio, enjoying 66 years of marriage. They were members of Grace Lutheran Church of Thornville. Together they managed Wal Mec Farm and operated Wal Mec Bed and Breakfast at the restored family homestead. The farm was recognized as an Ohio Century Farm.

He is survived by his wife, Annabelle; sons, Dr. Paul II (Joanne) of Pierpont, Ohio and Mark (Nancy) of Duncan Falls; grandchildren, Sarah (Marc) Loveland of Roaming Shores, Ohio and Noah Mechling of Millersburg; greatgrandchildren, Madison, Luke and Claire Loveland; sister, Margaret (Paul) Kose of Pickerington; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Kathleen and Mary Frances Mechling, Helen Hursey and brother Dewalt Mechling.

Paul served on many professional,community, civic, church and charitable organizations. He received numerous honors and recognitions including the Distinguished Alumnus Award, College of Agriculture, OSU; Ohio State Fair Hall of Fame; and Honorary State and American Farmer (FFA) Degrees.

Calling hours continue one hour prior to the funeral service. The service will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church with burial to follow at Highland Cemetery, Glenford.
