Support for parks levy

Editor:

I am writing to ask Fairfield County residents to vote ‘YES!’ in support of the Fairfield County Historical Parks. The .4 mill levy (4/10 of a mill) would provide the revenue needed to protect and preserve the natural and historical amenities at 16 parks, which includes 18 properties and 23 historical structures. This levy would also provide our residents with a myriad of recreational opportunities, from biking, hiking and walking trails to playgrounds at selected parks.

My family has been to a few of the parks for educational programs. I have been impressed that the Fairfield County Historical Parks system has been faithful to do so much with the little revenue they have been allocated by the county in the past. However, this revenue WILL BE DISCONTUED on January 1, 2012.

As taxpayers, paying this small millage will give us the opportunity to provide a great investment in our county’s educational and recreational opportunities, as well as invest in the conservation of our natural and historical heritage. Conservationist John Muir wrote, “Everybody needs beauty as well as bread, places to play in and pray in, where Nature may heal and cheer and give strength to body and soul alike.” I ask you to ensure that we do not lose these parks. Please join me in voting ‘YES!’ for the Fairfield County Historical Parks.
