Free Parent Workshop set for April 30
BUCKEYE LAKE – To mark National SpankOut Day, which focuses on effective alternatives to physical discipline, Mental Health America of Licking County’s Parent Support Program will be presenting a free two-hour interactive workshop at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Buckeye Lake Village on Saturday, April 30th beginning at 10:30 am.
Led by Parent Support Coordinator Judith Waite Allee and based on the book How to Talk So Kids Will Listen and Listen So Kids Will Talk by Faber and Mazlish, the workshop will focus on small but important steps that help improve family relationships and communication.
“Most parents want less yelling and chaos,” said MHA’s Parent
Support Coordinator, Judith Allee. “They want more fun times and closer relationships with their children and teens.”
Participating families, and other concerned adults, will watch and discuss skits with before and after scenarios of dealing with emotions. Children, ages 5-14, will be coached to present short skits expressing anger in a healthy way and then perform the skits for the parents.
Based on permission, a few of the skits may be videotaped to post on YouTube to create awareness of discipline alternatives and local parent education resources.
Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church is located at 5133 Walnut Rd. SE in Buckeye Lake Village. Light refreshments will be served.
