Ernest Ray Rodgers
A funeral service for Ernest Ray Rodgers, 81, of Thornville, was held March 16, 2011, at the Thornville Chapel of Boring- Sheridan-Schoedinger Funeral Home with Kelly O’Reilly officiating. Burial followed at Highland Cemetery in Glenford.
Ernest was born in Perry County on February 24, 1930, to the late Ernest Lee and Dora (Shahan) Rodgers. He passed away at his residence on March 12, 2011, while surrounded by his family.
Ernest was a truck driver for over 45 years, retiring from the Shelly Company in 1992. He also served several years as Zoning Inspector for Hopewell Township. He loved traveling to Florida with his wife in their RV every year for the winter. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and watching NASCAR, following Dale Earnhardt. He also enjoyed watching sports, especially the Cleveland Indians and the Dallas Cowboys. Most important in his life was spending time with his family. He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.
Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Patricia Anne (Hammer) Rodgers, whom he married on July 7, 1947; children, Roy (Mary Jane) Rodgers of Glenford, Kathy (Joe) Barnhart of Somerset, Randy (Ellen) Rodgers of Pleasantville and Debbie (Sean) O’Reilly of Glenford; grandchildren, Kim, Rhonda, Angie, Devan, Amy, Randy Jr., Velvet, Brandy, Josh and Jenny; 21 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.
In addition to his parents; he is preceded in death by one brother, Chuck Rodgers; two sisters, Geraldine Garey and Rachel Martindale; and one grandson, Grant Barnhart.
