Edna Martha Bachmann Woolard

A funeral service for Edna Martha Bachmann Woolard, age 97, of Newark, was held February 1, 2011, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, Newark, with Pastor William J. Rauch officiating. Burial followed in Cedar Hill Cemetery.

Edna passed away January 27, 2011, in Newark following a brief illness. She was born October 17, 1913, in Portsmouth, Ohio, to the late George and Frieda (Hurney) Bachmann.

Edna moved to Newark when she began 1st grade. She married her husband, Ernest, on December 28, 1946, at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Newark, where she was a lifelong member. She was employed at the Styron Beggs Company and Licking Laundry. Her primary role was a homemaker and mother.

She enjoyed dancing at the Crystal Ballroom, going to Newark High School basketball and football games, playing cards until the wee hours of the morning with friends, golf, horseback riding, Cincinnati Reds baseball games and any Ohio State Buckeye game.

Edna was a member of the Newark Garden Club, Harbor Hills Women’s Club, Newark Maennerchor, Newark Lions Auxiliary, Alpha Phi Sigma Sorority, and a founding member of Twig 11. She volunteered at the Newark Hospital during World War II and was a founding member of the still-active 1935 Bridge Club. She loved to garden, play the piano, and read Perry Mason and Anne of Green Gables books while sitting next to her beloved cats, William and Margaret.

Edna will be sadly missed by her daughters, Linda and Susan. She was the most popular one of “the girls” who enjoyed day trips all over Ohio, ballgames and eating out. She will always be an inspiration to all who knew her.

She is survived by her daughters, Linda and Susan; nephews, Gary (Molly) DeBevoise, Thomas (Jane) Lake, Dana (Edwina) Johnson and Howard Johnson; niece, Ruth Muska; great-nieces and nephews; dear friend, Debbie Fafrak; and many other beloved friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest W. Woolard; sisters, Ruth (Robert) Fulke and Bertha (Stanley) Lake; sistersin law, Mary (Roy) DeBevoise, Ruth (Dane) Johnson, Kathryn and Edna Woolard; and nephew, Kenneth (Mary Jane) Johnson.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Dawes Arboretum Legacy Tree.
