James Edward “Jim” Shipman

A funeral service for James Edward “ Jim” Shipman, age 47, of Newark, was held January 24, 2011, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Pastor Bill Beard officiating. Burial followed in Spring Grove Cemetery. Jim passed away on Wednesday, January 20, 2011, at The Ohio State University Medical Center from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on January 4. He was born August 15, 1963, in Ravenna, Ohio. Jim was a 1982 graduate of Sheridan High School and also graduated from vocational school in Zanesville where he studied mechanics. He was employed with Lane Aviation in Columbus. He began his career working in construction with his father for a number of years and they also farmed together. He was formerly employed by Top Cat Concrete in Buckeye Lake and Westerville, Burko Trucking in Columbus, Builders Transport in Newark, Quickway Carriers in Columbus and Kirk National Lease in Columbus. Jim was a member of Lighthouse Memorial Church in Buckeye Lake and was a charter member of the Tri-County Nazarene Church. He had also attended Newark Eastside Nazarene Church. Jim enjoyed working on cars and was well-known as being able to fix anything. Jim was often the first person family and friends would call when they had a vehicle that needed attention. Jim was a scrapper and really loved to haul junk and look around for unwanted scrap metal. His family was the light of his life and he loved to play trains with his grandson. Jim was a wonderful and loving husband, father and PawPaw and be will be greatly missed by his wife, Alice R. (Wood) Shipman, whom he married June 3, 1994; daughter and son-in-law, Katie (Wood-Shipman) and Scott Church; three grandchildren, Gabriel, Liam and Arwen Church; mother, Bonnie (Basinger) Shipman of Heath; brother, Steve (Annie) Shipman of Newark; sister, Paula (Tom) Groves of Gratiot; nieces and nephew, Stephanie Shipman, Rebecca Groves and Michael Groves; several aunts and uncles; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Linda and Wayne Conrad, Roy and Barb Wood, Burl and Sandra Wood and Faith Wood; niece, Amanda & Mike Webster; nephew, Roy Wood, Jr.; special nephew, Presley A. Wood; special friends, Kevin, Cindy, Jennifer and Christy Ford, Tiffany

Rice, Bill and Peggy Beard and many other friends; and his special dog and best friend, Oreo. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Edward Shipman on April 15, 2010.
