OSU President visits Millersport

MILLERSPORT – It had all the trappings of a political campaign stop for a candidate for governor, senator or president.

But in this case the main attraction already has the job he wants. E. Gordon Gee is in his second ‘term’ as President of The Ohio State University. He was president from 1990-97, leaving to become president of Brown University (1998-2000) and then Chancellor of Vanderbilt University until returning to Columbus in 2007.

Gee and his entourage spent about two hours last Wednesday at Buckeye Lake Marina and Weldon’s Ice Cream Factory. Millersport was one of the 40 -50 tour stops he makes each summer.

A pep band contingent from the Best Damn Band in the Land warmed up a crowd that didn’t really need warming up. Selections included Buckeye Battle Cry, Carmen Ohio and Hang on Sloopy. A student DJ moderated a Buckeye trivia contest.

Two varsity football players accompanied Gee. Senior offensive lineman Justin Boren (#65) needed little introduction since his Pickerington family has a summer home on Buckeye Lake. He was joined by junior defensive back Donnie Evege (#30). Both signed autographs for fans.

Both Evege and Gee signed Ed Levison’s special, one of two, Buckeye Edition Hummer.

Gee makes his summer tour stops to stay in touch with students during the summer, meet their parents and promote The Ohio State University. A photographer was available to take photos with Gee and he signed autographs for more than an hour.
