New Licking County library director selected

NEWARK – Babette Wofter was named Licking County Library Director late last week.

She is the system’s current assistant director and will replace Director Steven Hawk August 23. Hawk, who has been director for six years, announced his upcoming retirement late last year.

Licking County Library Board of Trustees selected Wofter from a field of 17 candidates. She has 21 years experience and started her career in 1989 as a Children’s librarian at Muskingum County Library System. She served as Youth Services Coordinator and Assistant Director at Perry County District Library and has been Licking County’s assistant director for the past five years. Wofter is an Ohio University graduate with a Masters of Library Science degree from Kent State University.

In her cover letter to the board, Wofter noted that she is familiar with the community, the staff, and the history of the organization and has hands-on experience in every department of the library.

“I am delighted to have been chosen to lad Licking County Library,” she said. I can hit the ground running. I look forward to working with the board and the great staff at LCL, our customers and local community groups. There will certainly be challenges ahead, but I am enthusiastic about what the future holds. My charge will be to ensure that our library remains a vital part of the community offering something for everyone all their life.”

In an email to Friends of the Buckeye Lake Library, she wrote, “Thank you so much for all you have done and continue to do for the branch at Buckeye Lake. I am absolutely delighted to have the opportunity to lead Licking County Library and want nothing but the best for all our locations. I look forward to talking to you.”
