Joseph Lee Lovejoy

Joseph Lee Lovejoy, loving husband and father, age 48, of Thornville, passed away on Sunday, June 20, 2010, at his residence from a battle with cancer.

He was born on March 31, 1962, in Columbus, to Luther Lee and Olivia Sue (Hoffman) Lovejoy. As a child, Joe had a love and passion for baseball and dreamed of pitching for the NY Yankees. He played in the Southern Independent Little League for Madison Green Diamond Squad where they took home the division title in a double elimination finals when Joe hit the winning grand slam homer. He also played in the Madison Minor League with the Groveport Reds where they went onto win the title of Top Ranking team in the Southeast Babe Ruth Association with a win-loss record of 11-0 as the SEBRA Champions. Joe was a member of the Madison Junior Bowling League where he achieved a perfect 300 score. As an adult, he played A and AA softball, traveling many places to play in tournaments including The Great Smokey Mountain Classic in Tennessee. He participated in the Long Drive Golf Competition where he won sectionals and went on to the divisional competition and placed second his first year. Joe pursued his hobby of motorcycle drag racing as a member in the NHRA, Prostar and IDBA divisions. He reached speeds of 155 mph in the quarter mile with an ETA of 8.75 seconds.

He enjoyed hunting and has many trophies including twelve White Tail bucks and three wild turkeys. He loved fishing, nostalgic cars, country music and was a chef extraordinaire, but most of all he loved his family. With his own hands, Joe designed and built his home and was very proud of this achievement. His greatest fulfillment was his gift to give his family everything they wanted in life. He was a member of the Local 132 Ohio Conference of Plasters & Cement Masons and worked for Kokosing Construction Co., Inc. He also owned and operated his own concrete business for many years. Joe was a jack of all trades and a true master of them all. He will be deeply missed by everyone whose heart and lives he touched while on this earth.

Joe is survived by his wife of 21 years, Monica Lovejoy; children, Joseph Lovejoy (Berk), Audra Lovejoy (Berk), Justin Schmus and Jourdain White; father, Luther Lee Lovejoy; sisters, Carla (Randy) Maumaw and Tonda Nichol; grandchildren, Mitchell Berk and Kayla Koontz; grandmother, Glenna “Mawmaw” Milhoan; step-mother, Drema Lovejoy; step-brothers, Greg, Chris and Buddy Burns; many nieces and nephews; and his best friend, Jimmy Nichols; along with many other close friends.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Olivia Sue Henderson, and great grandmother, Lillian “Mom” Ward.
