Mary Elizabeth Gockenbach

A funeral service, celebrating the life of Mary Elizabeth Gockenbach, 84, of Hebron, was held May 11, 2010, in the chapel of the Hoskinson Funeral Home, Kirkersville with her brother, Pastor George Gordon as celebrant. Burial followed at Kirkersville Cemetery.

Mary died Thursday, May 6, 2010, at her home, surrounded by her family. She was born January 8, 1926, in Thornport, the daughter of John E. and Elsie M. (Hoover) Gordon. She was a 1943 graduate of Hebron High School and was extremely active in the community, holding memberships in the Hebron and Buckeye Lake Historical Societies, Hebron Red Hat Ladies, Hebron 55+ plus club, Eagon Chapter #123, Order of Eastern Star, a 51 year member and past president of the American Legion Auxillary at Hebron, member Buckeye Lake VFW Auxiliary, Buckeye Lake Eagles Auxiliary, and Ladies of the Moose at Thornport. She retired from Lakewood Schools in 1986, after 18 years of service. Mary was a delight to know; she loved to cook and entertain and will be sadly missed by her family and friends. Her annual dress-up Halloween party was enjoyed by her friends for many years. She was known for her beautiful smile.

She is survived by her loving family: her children, Patricia (Thomas) Waters of Thornville, Sharon Campbell of Columbus and William K. (Koni) Gockenbach of Hebron; her grandchildren, Shelly (John) Young, Jamie (Kiyoko) Campbell, Naysa (Jimmy) Hatfield, Kevin Gockenbach, Chris Twaddle, Jeff (Kelly) Waters, and Kim Waters; six great-grandchildren; her brother, George (Alice) Gordon of Hebron; and her sister, Shirley Burdette of Ripley, W.V.; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 54 years, Arthur William “Bill” Gockenbach in 2001, whom she married on August 31, 1946.
