BUCKEYE LAKE- The Buckeye Lake Tree Commission readied a Cyprus tree for planting in the village’s future nature park west of the village Friday. Commission members Clay Carroll, Crystal Davis, Frank Foster, Annetta Macedonia, and Pam Reed (Village Council President Charlene Hayden, center, represented Mayor Rick Baker who could not attend) dedicated the tree behind the Buckeye Lake Library on Arbor Day. “The planting of this tree is a symbol of our commitment to making our community ‘green,’ which, in turn, promotes the health and well being of our current and future residents,” said Hayden on behalf of Baker. “Just as we, as adults, try to set examples for young people, we hope this tree planting will inspire future generations to follow suit.” Beacon photo by Scott Rawdon. JACKSONTOWN – The Dawes Arboretum hosted its annual Arbor Day Festival last Saturday.

The early morning rain and intermittent light rain throughout the day did not shut down the popular tree climbing activity. Hundreds of youth ‘climbed’ two large trees in safety harnesses, using rappelling gear.

More down to earth activities included electric safety demonstrations by co-sponsor The Energy Cooperative, wood carving by the Land of Legend Woodcarvers, a miniature mineral dig by the Rock & Mineral Society, a free tree and plenty of information on the honored guests.
