Dorothy Powers Smith

Dorothy Powers Smith, age 87, of Whitehall, passed away Wednesday, February 10, 2010, at Mt. Carmel East Hospital in Columbus.

Dorothy was born on September 27, 1922, in Thornville. She graduated from Hebron High School in 1940. She attended Capital University (Harms and Harms Business School) and worked at Commercial Motor Freight before she married. Dorothy loved the out-of-doors and was an avid gardener. Her beautiful flowers and wonderful vegetables were the pride of her summers. She worked as a dental assistant until her retirement in 1994.

Dorothy was a loving mother and a source of strength for her entire family. She was a great advisor and inspiration to her children, teaching through example and providing not only the necessities for her family, but the love and guidance to nurture them.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Dorthea Kay Smith, Cindy (Darry) Sprague and James (Coleen) Smith; grandchildren, Patricia Sprague and John Sprague; great grandchildren, Christian Custer, Jordan Crossley and Gabriel Crossley; niece, Ellen Maurer; nephew, James (Rosalee) Powers; great nieces, Sarah Powers and Elizabeth Powers; and great nephews, Joseph Maurer and Benjamin Powers.

She is preceded in death by grandparents, James and Annie (Crist) Long; mother, Edith Long Lyons; and brother: Harold Powers.

Funeral service was February 14, 2010, with Reverend Coleen Smith officiating at Grace Lutheran Church, Thornville. Burial followed at Lutheran Reformed Cemetery, Thornville.
