Leon C. Kennedy
A funeral service for Leon C. Kennedy, age 75, of Jacksontown, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 11, at the Newark Chapel of Henderson-Van Atta- Stickle Funeral & Cremation Service with Pastor Tom Hughes officiating. Burial will take place in Mountain View Cemetery, Rural Retreat, Virginia.
Mr. Kennedy died December 6, 2009, at Riverside Methodist Hospital. He was born August 31, 1934, in Vivian, West Virginia to the late Young Hatfield Kennedy and Attie (Cisco) Kennedy.
Mr. Kennedy served in the United States Navy. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from Bluefield State College in West Virginia and a Master of Arts degree in Education from Morehead State University in Kentucky.
Mr. Kennedy and his wife moved to the Newark area in 1962 to be closer to family. Mr. Kennedy taught social studies for Newark City Schools for 26 years, retiring in 1988, having been employed at Central (Kennedy) and Lincoln Junior High Schools.
He was a very active member and former vice-president of the Newark Teachers Association in the late 60’s. He was also a member of Phi Delta Kappa Chapter #94, Moose Lodge #499 and had a Brown Belt in Karate and was affiliated with the Ryukyu Karate Association.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Zina M. (Roberts) Kennedy; son, Pastor E.J. Kennedy of Jacksontown, formerly of Texas; sister, June Etta (Gene) Kanniard of Johnstown; brother, Tex E. Kennedy of Princeton, West Virginia; many cousins in southern West Virginia; many nieces and nephews; and sister-in-law, Peggy Roberts of Heath.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Randolph Kennedy; and brother-in-law, E. George Roberts, who died November 2, 1977.
