Storybook Science - Thursday, Dec. 10, 10 a.m. and 1 p.m. Join us on the second and fourth Thursdays of each month for a look into science using stories in children’s literature. Each session is unique. Designed for children ages three to five years old, sessions include a tale, songs, finger plays, crafts, outdoor explorations, puzzles and creative movement. Free, donations welcome; meet at the Discovery Center.
Home School Investigations: The Science of Snow- Tuesday, December 15, 9 - 10:30am, $3 per child, guardians free, Discovery Center, Join other home school students in exploration of our natural world. Each session will include a hands-on science study correlated with the Ohio Academic Content Standards for Science. Sessions are for home schoolers ages six to ten.

• Dec. 29: A Mantle of White- William C. Kraner Nature Center, 10380 Fairview Road, Newark. Join us for a snow extravaganza from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29! Through fun crafts and hands-on activities, children will get a firsthand look at different snowflake shapes, learn how to save snowflakes and even make their own snow! If we are lucky to have snow on the ground we will venture outside and have even more fun! Dress for inside and outside activities. Help us kick off 2010 with our last hands-on astronomy program in the series from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 2. This time around we will be focusing on the moon. Our friends from Ohio Nature Education will help us learn the answers to common questions and more as we study the full moon in all its splendor through a telescope. Lions Community Day - Baltimore. Help stock the Baltimore Food Pantry for the holidays and enjoy a free funnel cake courtesy of the Baltimore Lions from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 12 on Baltimore Square – intersection of Ohio 256 and 158. Items needed include box dinners, canned soup, canned fruit, macaroni, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, pork and beans, flour, sugar, saltine crackers, short- ening, catsup, toilet paper, liquid dish soap, shampoo, cake mixes and frosting.
Eye glasses may also be dropped off, and information will be available for free eyeglasses referrals, diabetic supply assistance and Lions membership.
Texas Hold’em Tournament Hebron. Lakewood Athletic Boosters sponsore the Licking Conty Area Winter Championship Dec. 11 - 12 at the Hebron American Legion Hall, 103 N. Water St. Action starts at 6 p.m. on Friday with cash tables and registration at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Outville Christmas Parade - Outville. The 14th annual Outville Christmas parade is at 3 p.m. on Saturday, December 12,. Parade registration and lineup begins at 1:30 p.m. at the Harrison Township Community Complex located at 6750 Outville Rd. S.W. The parade features motorcycles, antique cars, trucks, tractors, equestrian units, organizations, bands and more! The parade travels north on Outville Road from the Community Complex. After the parade, there will be entertainment, a goodies auction, and a visit from Santa himself at the Community Complex.. Refreshments will also be served including cornbread and the renowned Outville ham and bean soup.
Live Nativity - Baltimore. New Zion United Methodist Church will present a live nativity from 5 to 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec.12. (Rain date is Dec. 13.) Live animals including a camel will be included in the scene as well as music. A “secret” family gift shop (all items are $1) will be inside the church as well as children’s crafts and refreshments for all. The church is on the corner of Stemen and Snyder Church roads, northwest of Baltimore. Food donations for the Baltimore food pantry will be accepted.
Pancake Breakfast - Thurston. The Thurston-Walnut Township Fire Department will hold a pancake breakfast on from 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, December 19 at 8474 High Street, Thurston. Suggested donations are $5 for adults and $3 for children. The menu is:sausage, pancakes, eggs, sausage gravy, biscuits, orange juice, coffee, tea, and milk. Heisey Wind Ensemble Christmas Concert - The Reese Center at Ohio State University Newark/COTC. The Heisey Wind Ensemble presents their annual holiday program with a concert titled “Christmas, The Joy and Spirit” on Saturday, December 12, at 8:00 p.m. The 55 member concert band is under the direction of Dr. Russel Mikkelson, Director of Bands at The Ohio State University in Columbus. The band is celebrating their 25th anniversary season in 2009-2010. Appearing with the HWE will be the Johnstown Monroe High School Symphonic Choir under the direction of Jeff Rings. Also featured will be former local radio personality Bob Brooker as narrator on a special arrangement by Randal Alan Bass of “The Night Before Christmas”. A capacity crowd is anticipated. Those planning to attend are urged to arrive early. Tickets for the concert will be available at the door. Adults are $10, seniors (60+) and students are $5, and children under 12 are admitted free.
Flutasia Concert - Millersport. The musical group , Flutasia, will present a free Christmas program at 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 20 at the Millersport United Methodist Church. A candlelight reception will follow. Everyone is welcome.
