Sheriff’s Office gets enforcement grant

NEWARK - The Licking County Sheriff’s Office plans to use more than $50,000 in recently awarded grant money to help reduce highway fatalities.

The office was awarded the 2010 High Visibility Enforcement Overtime grant from the Governor’s Highway Safety Office (GHSO). The federal grant provides 100 percent reimbursement for safety belt, alcohol and speed related enforcement.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Association, nearly one in fiveAmericans (19 percent nationally) fail to regularly wear seat belts when driving or riding in a motor vehicle, though regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in crashes.

Through the GHSO grant program, the sheriff’s office is required to participate in ten mandatory extra-enforcement pushes and will coordinate with other agencies to target common traffic fatality risks.
