Support for school levy renewal

Editor:

The Walnut Township Local Board of Education has placed a property tax renewal on the November 3 ballot. The tax, originally approved on May 6, 2003, is due to expire on December 31, 2009.

Why is the district asking that the levy be renewed? The levy represents $258,000 of revenue for the schools, or approximately 4.2% of the General Fund Expenditures for Fiscal Year 2009. These dollars are used for the day-to-day operations of the schools, including the recent upgrades to the facilities. Without the income, the district simply cannot continue to operate its schools and continue to fund its current programs in the manner of which we are accustomed.

How much will the levy cost me? The levy renewal will cost the owner of a $100,000 home approximately $64 per year. The original levy in 2003 cost the same homeowner $70.44 per year during the previous five year period of time. This levy request will actually cost slightly less than when it was first approved.

I, for one, have seen the improvements, some of which have been planned for years, have finally happened. I have the utmost confidence in the administration and the manner in which the funds have been utilized. I urge all voters in the Walnut Township School District to vote yes to the renewal School levy, Issue Number 18.
