Edward E. "Ed" Brookover
A funeral service celebrating the life of Edward E. "Ed" Brookover, 80, of Millersport, will be held Thursday, Sept. 10, at 2:00 p.m. in the Millersport United Methodist Church, with Pastor Steve Bush as celebrant. Burial will follow in Millersport Cemetery.
Ed died suddenly, Saturday morning, September 5, 2009, at Riverside Methodist Hospital, Columbus. He was born February 18, 1929, in New Martinsville, WV, the son of the late Fred and Clara (Thomas) Brookover.
He was a graduate of Magnolia High School in New Martinsville where he was awarded the Magnolia Athletic Lifetime Achievement Award; Marshall University, University of Tennessee and The Ohio State University.
Ed retired in 1986, after serving as superintendent of schools at Walnut Township (Millersport) for 21 years. He was well known throughout the state for his tireless efforts to advance education and sports in the public schools. Prior to serving at Millersport, he was superintendent at Port Washington Schools, served as principal for the James A Garfield High School in Garrettsville, and taught and coached basketball at Thornville, Millersport and Pomeroy.
In addition to his professional endeavors, Ed was well known as a member and past president of the Millersport Lions Club, where he was a Melvin Jones Fellow; the Millersport United Methodist Church; the Ohio High School Athletic Association, where he had been inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame; and the Millersport Post of the American Legion.
He is survived by his loving family: his wife, Rosalie (Anderson), whom he married on November 30, 1951; his children, Edward II (Barbara) of Falls Church, VA, David (Jennifer) of Millersport, Erin (Steven) McCurry of Smyrna, GA, Scott (Sonya) of Brandon, FL; his four grandchildren, Edward III, Stacy, Craig and Kyle; his siblings, Mae (Stanley) Rybarz, Fred (Patty) Brookover, Elsie (Edward) Taylor, Bill (Sandy) Brookover; many nieces and nephews.
His family will receive friends from 1-2 p.m. on Thursday at the Millersport United Methodist Church.
They have requested that expressions of sympathy in the form of memorial contributions be made to the Millersport Track Fund, c/o Walnut Township Local Schools, 11850 Lancaster St., Millersport, Ohio 43046.
