Dawes Arboretum - Ohio 13, three miles north of I-70.

Pruning Practicum: Pruning Conifers - Saturday July 11, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m., $15/$10 members. Reservation required, at the Visitors Center. The class will take a ride with Arboretum Curator of Conifers Jeff Bowman to the Conifer Glen for outdoor work. This will be a very hands-on class featuring the proper methods for pruning different conifers in the landscape.

Night Hike- Friday, July 17, 9 p.m. - 11 p.m. Free, meet at the Visitors Center Deck. Experience The Arboretum at night! Kids and adults are welcome to attend the hike through collections, woodlands and trails on one of our most popular programs.

The grounds are open from dawn to dusk. The Visitors Center is open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 1 to 5 p.m. Sundays and holidays. Call 740-323-2355 or 800-44-DAWES for information or visit www. dawesarb.org.

Independence Day Concert and Fireworks - Newark. Come out Friday, July 3, to the campus of The Ohio State University at Newark and Central Ohio Technical College. The event is free and open to all. Sticks & Stones 2 opens the festivities at 6:30 p.m., followed by the Newark- Granville Symphony Orchestra (NGSO) at approximately 8:15 p.m. Joining the orchestra for special guest appearances will be highly-acclaimed soprano Alison Davy, and another local musical favorite Common Thread. A fireworks display will begin at dusk to the accompaniment of patriotic favorites performed by the symphony. All performances will be held at the Martha Grace Reese Amphitheatre. A number of local vendors will be serving food and beverages on the campus grounds during the event. Bring your lawn chairs, picnics and blankets for a fun-filled evening of music and entertainment. Free parking is available at the campus. The annual Independence Day Concert and Fireworks is fully funded by the Reese Family Foundation.

Independence Day Commemoration - Buckeye Lake. The public is invited to a flag raising at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 4 at the Buckeye Lake Yacht Club. The ceremony includes an Ohio Air National Guard flyover.

Giant Garage Sale & Raffle - Pataskala. Licking County United Way is the beneficiary of a charity garage sale and raffle on Friday, July 10 and Saturday, July 11, at Henkels and McCoy, an engineering and construction firm, at 13338 E. Broad Street in Pataskala. Donations for the garage sale will be accepted through Thursday, July 9. Call 740-927-1737 for more information.

Farmers Market - Baltimore. The market, featuring fresh produce, baked goods, noodles, crafts, and entertainment, will be held from 5-7 p.m. on Fridays from July 17 through October 23 at the old Basil Western Firehouse, corner of High and Market streets. Be Creative with Music - Hebron. Come to the Hebron Library on Tuesday, July 7, at 11 a.m. to explore the world of music through stories, activities and a craft. This free program is for children in grades K thru 5. Call the Library at 928.3923 for more information.

Free Movie - Hebron. Bring the family to Hebron Evans Park for a free screening of "Finding Nemo" on Friday, July 10. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. Free movie nights are sponsored by the Hebron Business Association.

Jazz and Ribs Fest - Newark. Come down to Courthouse Square for ribs and jazz from noon to 8 p.m. on Saturday, July 11.Vendors line the north and east side of the Square selling ribs while cool jazz eminates from the Gazebo.

Crooksville-Roseville Pottery Festival 5-K race and onemile walk - Roseville. The race will start and finish in Roseville Village Park at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, July 18. Pre-registration is $15 and on-site registration is $20. All participants will receive a race T-shirt. Awards will be given to the top three finishers in each of the eight age groups. Licking Park District - Licking County. Don't miss this Licking Park District event:

Bug Beauty Contest - Join the Licking Park District for the first ever "Miss Creepy-Crawly Contest" on July 12 at 2:00 p.m. at Taft Reserve's William C. Kraner Nature Center. We aren't asking our participants to play the piano or sing opera snippets. This contest will be one of true beauty. Join us as we scour the fields and meadows around the William C. Kraner Nature Center in search of spiders and insects. Whoever catches the bug voted "most beautiful" wins first prize! Following our hike and beauty contest we will learn about bug body parts, including the abdomen and thorax and what they are used for. We will, learn the life cycle of various bugs. We'll even make a buggy craft or two to take home. So don't stay inside, venture out and join us for the Miss Creepy-Crawly Contest! There is a $3 fee per person with a $10 family max.
