New Wave!

Area pools reopen
By Scott Rawdon

MILLERSPORT, THORNVILLE- It's still the greatest summer job in the world. Millersport Pool lifeguard Zane Maughmer returned to his post, somewhat saddened that this may be his last summer as a lifeguard now that he's graduated high school. "I may be joining the Navy," he said, but his options are open.

Maughmer said it took much effort on many people's part to reopen the pool this year because of the down economy, but it was obviously appreciated Monday as young people and parents packed the pool under the hot sun.

A few miles away in Thornville, the scene was similar. It was pool manager Amy McCartney's third day on the job and she had her hands full. "My kids talked me into it," said the first grade Hebron Elementary teacher. She also teaches summer school, so McCartney's had experience managing teenagers, like the pool's lifeguards and concession employees.

Thornville Mayor Beth Patrick said the Buckeye Lake Moose Lodge #2434 contributed $26,373 to help reopen the pool this year.

Knock on wood, Maughmer said he's never had to pull anyone from the water in the four years he's been a Millersport lifeguard. "Thankfully," he said. "I'm always watching, though; I'm always ready."
