'Honoring our past defines us and our future'
On Sunday May 17, 2009, 36 volunteers joined Boy Scout Troop 404 to clean Millersport Cemetery. Starting with Mathias Miller's memorial to the most recent grave site, every tombstone was trimmed and the grass cleared so the names were readable.
On Memorial Day, if you had the opportunity to listen to Pastor Steve Bush's stirring tribute to our veterans and loved ones and were able to watch the gentle wind blow the flags of the deceased veterans, you knew you were in the midst of something special. For those brief moments, everything was right in the world. Something good happened because of those volunteers, Pastor Bush and the participants in the parade. We all had the chance to pay forward and remember backward. Veterans from the Civil War, Spanish-American War, WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam rest in our cemetery and are all part of our legacy. Honoring our past defines us and our future. It is right to do so.
