Samuel Stanley Schaffner Jr.
Samuel Stanley Schaffner Jr., 85, passed away Thursday, Feb. 12, 2009, at Heartland Fairfield Nursing Center.
Samuel was born in Baltimore on Dec. 14, 1923, to the late Samuel and Pauline Stalter Schaffner Sr. Samuel was a graduate of Liberty Union High School. He was a lifetime member of the VFW Post No. 3761, the American Legion in Pleasantville and a Mason. Samuel was the State Commander of the Ohio VFW from 1975 to 1976 and State Quarter Master of the Ohio VFW from 1978 to 1989.
He was the first tax commissioner for the Village of Baltimore and a longtime jeweler in Baltimore. He was an avid follower of his grandson's athletic accomplishment. Samuel served his country and protected our freedoms as a soldier in the U.S. Army during World War II.
Samuel is survived by daughters, Nancee Schaffner of North Claredon, Vt., and JoDell (Thomas) Siefert of Millersport; sons, Larey (Phyllis) Schaffner of Baltimore and Scott (Aida) Schaffner of North Claredon, Vt.; five grandchildren, Adam (Erin) Schaffner, Aaron Schaffner, Matthew (Debbie) Schaffner, Ethan Schaffner and Andres Loffsner; great-granddaughter, Rylee Schaffner; brother, John (Luray) Schaffner of Maryland; and several nephews and a niece.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Carole; his parents; and brother, Bruce Schaffner.
Services were February 17, 2009, at Johnson-Smith Funeral Home, Baltimore, with the Rev. Michael Donnally officiating.
Burial followed in the Basil Memorial Cemetery, Baltimore.
