Raymond F. King

Raymond F. King, age 84 of Thornville, passed away Monday, February 2, 2009, at his home.

He was born in Thornville on September 22, 1924, to the late Floyd and Marie (Swinehart) King. A graduate of Thornville High School, he entered OSU and enlisted in the service in 1942. He remained in the Army until transferring to the Dept. of Air Force in 1947, reaching the rank of Lt. Colonel. He retired in 1965. During his military service, he attended pilot training communication and pre-meteorological training, receiving a degree from the University of Maryland in 1963. He was stationed in or saw temporary service in 24 states and 18 foreign countries or territories during his military career.

Following retirement in 1965, he farmed on his 100+ year family farm in Thornville. He was a life member of Grace Lutheran Church, a life member of the American Legion Post 342 and life member of the National Farmers Organization. Having a strong community involvement, he served as a substitute teacher at Sheridan High School and served in various volunteer capacities and many local organizations.

He is survived by his wife, Winifred (Kelley) King of 49 years, 9 months; foster daughter, Janet (Hodge) Ganci; sister, Lois King Lyle; sister in-law, Claire Bertrand and Mary Nealley; brother in-law, Ronald Kelley; special nieces, Jane Harman, and Anne Tucker and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers in-law, Harold Lyle, Andrew Nealley and Roy Bertrand.

Calling hours will be held Friday, February 6, 2009, from 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. at Boring-Sheridan Funeral Home, 56 South Main Street, Thornville.

Funeral service will be Saturday, February 7, 2009, at 10 a.m. with Pastors Jeff and Patti Morlock officiating, Pastor Doug Lynn will be speaking of Raymond's life in the service and in the community. Burial will follow at Lutheran Reformed Cemetery, Thornville. Military honors will be conducted by the Wright Patterson Color Guard, Dayton.
