A funeral service for Margaret Beard, 97, of Thornville, will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at Zion United Church of Christ, 8000 High Point Road, Thornville, with Dr. Herbert Hicks officiating. Burial will be in Somerset Cemetery.
Mrs. Beard died at 12:55 p.m. Monday, Dec. 8, 2008, at Autumn Healthcare of Somerset. She was born April 11, 1911, in Dresden, to the late Carl and Margaret Agnes (Armstrong) Vandenbark.
She received a BS from Ohio University and taught first grade at Trinway Grade School. She then completed her MS at Ohio University and supervised student teachers at Northern Illinois State Normal School (Northern Illinois University). She returned to teaching first grade at Thornville Elementary. She was the first elementary supervisor in Perry County and helped establish the special education program in Perry County. She was very proud that she had taught so many young people to read.
Mrs. Beard was a member of Zion United Church of Christ, Unity Reading Circle, Ohio Retired Teachers Association, Perry County Chapter of Retired Teachers Association, Nondescript Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Gamma Sigma Chapter, Perry County Historical Society and Daughters of the American Revolution. In retirement, she had the opportunity to travel six continents and enjoy her flower garden.
She is survived by her children, Margaret Ann (Thomas) Hayden, of Normal, Ill., and Neil (Janet) Beard, of Thornville; and two grandchildren, Katherine and Clayton Beard, of Thornville.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ivan C. Beard, whom she married June 22, 1939, in Dayton and who passed away April 9, 1971; and a sister, Eleanor.
Friends may call from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the church.
