Alta Marie Arnold

Alta Marie Arnold, 93, of Somerset, went home to the Lord at 5:20 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 5, 2008, from her home after celebrating the return of her greatgrandson, Bryan, from Iraq.

Alta was born July 16, 1915, in Chesterhill in Morgan County, the youngest daughter of the late Henry and Jane Sutton George.

After graduating from Somerset High School in 1935, she married George K. Arnold and became a devoted wife, and as her children began to arrive, she became a beloved and dedicated mother. She remained a stay-athome mother on the family farm, keeping the house, preparing the meals, comforting her children and occasionally helping with the farm chores.

In 1961 Alta became a cook at the new Sheridan High School. She cooked for the school many years before retiring and returning to her favorite job, mother, and by then, grandmother. She enjoyed quilting, making heirloom quilts for family and friends. Being an active participant in her husband's painting and roofing business about this time, she worked around Somerset in the summer and Florida in the winter months.

Alta enjoyed her family, traveling with George to Florida, Arkansas and many other destinations on pleasure; visiting relatives, friends and attending church conferences. Alta was a member of United Church of God.

Alta was a devoted and loving wife to George, whom she married Oct. 14, 1937. They were married 69 years prior to George's passing in 2006. Surviving are her four children, Elizabeth "Betty" (Doyne) Swackhammer of Somerset, George R. (Barbara) Arnold of Wooster, Jim (Linda) Arnold of Mount Perry and David (Vera) Arnold of Bowling Green; eight grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and eight great-greatgrandchildren.

In addition to her parents and beloved husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters, Laura Love and Vesta O'Neal; and two brothers, Charlie George and Gail George.

A graveside service took place November 7, 2008, in New Reading Cemetery with Minister Bill Jahns officiating.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Somerset-Reading Township EMS, P.O. Box 547, Somerset, OH 43783.
