$20,000 raised so far for Millersport track renovation

Editor:

This letter is to update the residents of the Walnut Township School District on the efforts of the Millersport Schools Track/Athletic Facilities Renovation Committee. Thanks to alumni, residents and businesses, we have now received $20,000 in donations. We have sent letters seeking donations to approximately 70 percent of the residents in our school district and will finish this project in the next two weeks. We are looking forward to receiving more generous donations.

Right now, we are doing a "Beef Raffle" with just 250 tickets at $20 each. The prize is $1,000 worth of beef (a side) that will be completely processed and packaged. The drawing will be done in September. Raffle tickets are available at Weldon's Ice Cream Factory (467-2400), Millersport home football games or from members of the committee. One of our committee members is looking for and applying for matching grants. We hope these efforts will be successful.

The Walnut Township Schools Board of Education decided at its August board meeting not to put a 1 mill levy on the November ballot to generate funds to renovate our athletic facilities. Their decision was based on the fact that they need to get an existing levy renewed in November. Superintendent Ron Thornton has assured us that he will do all that he can to help us reach our goal. He is looking into some funding opportunities that will help greatly. His efforts are appreciated.

I want to reassure all contributors that all money received will go to the Millersport Athletic Boosters where it will be earmarked for the Track Renovaton. The money will not be used for any other uses.

I sincerely appreciate the efforts of our committee memebers. They have done a very good job and I am looking forward to continuing to work with them. This project will take time to complete. If you have any questions, would like to join our committee, or help in any way, please call me at 246-6101.

Ken Keener, Chair Walnut Township
