Martha R. Thomas
A funeral service celebrating the life of Martha R. Thomas, 91, formerly of Duncan Falls, will be at noon Saturday at the Duncan Falls Presbyterian Church, 376 Main St., Duncan Falls, with the Rev. Tim Thomas officiating. Burial will be in Duncan Falls Cemetery.
Martha passed away Friday afternoon, June 27, 2008, at the Pataskala Oaks Care Center, where she was a resident. She was born in April 19, 1917, in Nashport, to William Ray and Helen (Francis) Berkshire.
Martha was a graduate of Nashport High School, class of 1934, and Meredith Business College.
She worked for Soil Conservation services in Dayton, the Dayton Rubber Manufacturing Co. and served as the executive secretary to the chairman of the board at Shawnee Pottery Co.
Martha was an active member and past president of the Twin City Garden Club and served in various positions on the regional board of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs, where she also was a past state president.
She was frequently the recipient of best of show and honorable mention blue ribbons and received numerous other awards for her floral and gardening talents.
She was a founding member of the Bethesda Hospital Rose Society.
Martha was an active member of the Duncan Falls Presbyterian Church, being the second-longest-living member, and a member of the women's association at the church. She also was a 60-year-plus member of Olive Branch Chapter, Order of Eastern Star and the Duncan Falls Lioness club.
Martha treasured her friendships, some of which spanned more than 70 years. She entertained throughout her life, and her guests always were treated to a wide selection of delicious edibles, hand-crafted decoration and incomparable ambiance.
She is survived by her caring son and loving daughter-in-law, John B. and Ethel Thomas, of Kirkersville; three granddaughters, Stacey (Michael) Casselberry, of North Ridgeville, Kristine (Todd) Vance, of Lewis Center, and Kathleen Thomas, of Bexley; two stepgranddaughters, Debra (Mark) Mecozzi, of Gahanna, and Christel (Cory) Best, of Dublin; great-grandchildren, Tyler Brumfield, Natalie, Patrick and Megan Casselberry, and Braedon, Josie and Tobin Vance; and stepgreat-grandchildren, Meredith and Olivia Mecozzi and Lindsay Best.
Martha was preceded in death by her parents; husband, John W. Thomas, to whom she was married for more than 40 years until his death in 1985; and sister and brother-in-law, Eloise and David McCann.
Her family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at Duncan Falls Presbyterian Church.
