National Yard Sale Days - US 40. The Hebron Historical Society, Village of Hebron and Union Township community are participating in the 3rd Annual National Road Yard Sale Days in Licking County! May 31, 9 am - 4 pm The National Road Yard Sale is also celebrating Licking County's Bicentennial! Look for Bicentennial items for sale along the road. Some folks will be hosting yard sales on Sunday, June 1 also. But Saturday is the big day in Hebron. For more information visit www.ohio40.com.
Senior Fishing Derby - Newark. The 19th annual senior fishing tournament is slated to run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, June 4 at T. J. Evans Park in Newark. A picnic-style meal will be served at noon. Meal reservations can be made by calling the Licking County Aging Program's nutrition department at 345-0821 or 1-800- 452-0097 by June 3. Transportation inquires can be directed to LCAP's transportation department. The event is for those 55 and over and the physically challenged. The fishing derby is a joint venture of the Land of Legend Fly Fishermen and Friends, City of Newark Parks and Recreation Department and LCAP. Fishing permits are available at the park but you should furnish your own tackle. The rain date for the event is June 11.
Lake Tours - Buckeye Lake. See historic Buckeye Lake by boat. Take a ride on the Greater Buckeye Lake Historical Society's Queen of the Lake II. The 50-passenger boat cruises every Saturday and Sunday at 2 p.m. from May to October. Board at the Buckeye Lake State Park's North Shore Ramp just off Ohio 79 in the Village of Buckeye Lake. Tours are not operated during thunderstorms. Suggested donations are $10 for adults and $8 for seniors and children. Children under age 5 are free. Heath & Wellness Fair - Hebron. Stop by the Hebron Municipal Complex on Friday, May 30 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 :00 p.m. for a wealth of information on health and wellness issues. It's a great opportunity to check up on your health with free tests including blood sugar and cholesterol screenings, pregnancy tests and ultrasounds, compuerized spinal analysis and nutritional evaluations. Millersport Little Lakers Poker Run - Buckeye Lake. Help support youth football and cheerleading by coming out for the first annual poker run on Saturday, June 7 starting from the Beachridge Lounge in Buckeye Lake. The rain date is Saturday, June 14. Registration begins at 11 a.m. and the last bike is out at 1 p.m. Cost is $10 per person with a 50% payout to the rider with the best poker hand. Enjoy the after party at the Beachridge. Proceeds benefit youth athletes and cheerleaders.
Frontier Power Hot Air Balloon Festival - Coshocton. Ohio's oldest hot air balloon festival returns June 6-8 at the Coshocton County Fairgrounds. Balloon launches and fly-ins are scheduled (weather permitting) Friday, June 6, from 6-7:30 p.m.; Saturday, June 7, from 6-7:30 a.m. and again from 6-7:30 p.m.; and Sunday, June 8, from 6-7:30 a.m. Visitors can enjoy enjoy midway attractions, carnival rides, fireworks, musical entertainment, food vendors and many other familyoriented activities. Friday night's entertainment is the band Average White Broads from 6-9 p.m. and fireworks at 9:15 p.m.. Saturday night, Phil Dirt and the Dozers perform from 7:30 - 9:00 p.m. with the popular balloon Night Glow at 9:15 p.m. Admission, entertainment and parking are free. Guided Bird Walk - Denison Biological Reserve. Whitney Stocker, of Denison's biology department, will host a guided bird walk at the Denison Biological Reserve (1258 North Street, North SR 661) at 8 a.m. on Saturday, May 31, weather permitting. The tour will focus on identifying by song the more than 70 species of birds that nest at the Bioreserve. Binoculars and shoes that can withstand wet grass are recommended.
Music in the Courtyard - Newark. The Works will hold its first free "Music in the Courtyard" concert on Friday, June 6 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in the LeFevre Courtyard, one block south of the Courthouse Square in downtown Newark. Newark band, "Common Thread" will perform a mix of music from classic rock to folk favorites. Band members are Hugh Price, Kevin Plaugher and Tim Hofmeister. Some chairs and tables will be provided but attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to lay on the grass. Concertgoers can bring their own lunches or purchase food and drinks at the concert. In the event of rain, the concert will be moved indoors. Outdoor Dance Party - Newark. The Ohio State University at Newark's Afropop Ensemble invites the community to a free outdoor dance party at 7 p.m. on Saturday, May 31 at the Martha Grace Reese Amphitheatre. The Ensemble will play lively compositions from Guinée, Madagascar, Mali, Zimbabwe and Congo. The concert is open to the public and families and children are encouraged to attend. Afropop is a term used to describe popular music of Africa, and often includes elements of various African and western rhythms. Instrumentation commonly includes guitars, bass, keyboard, drum set and horns. A variety of authentic African instruments, such as kora, ngoni, kabosy (from Madagascar), hand drums and accordion are also featured. In case of rain, the event will take place in The Alford Performing Arts Hall, located in the John Gilbert Reese Center.
