PICKERINGTON - Lakewood's Lady Lancers brought home another Central District Division III softball championship last Thursday. It was a particularly sweet victory.

The Lady Lancers, ranked #1 in the state in Division III, beat two-time defending state champion Bloom-Carroll 3-0 on Emily Voehringer's three run home run in the bottom of the eighth inning. The win broke Bloom-Carroll's streak of 17 straight tournament wins leading to their state championships in 2006 and 2007.

Junior pitcher Gabby Gillilan had won all 17 games and she held the Lancers to just two hits through the regulation seven innings.

Lakewood's Alissa Birkhimer matched Gillilan, limiting Bloom- Carroll to just two hits before striking out the side in the top of the eighth inning. She tallied a total of 10 strikeouts.

Lakewood struck quickly in the bottom of the eighth inning with one out. Courtney Kidwell walked and Megan Swiantek got on with a bunt single. Then Voehringer hit her second career home run over the fence in right center field.

The Lady Lancers face 25-1 Zane Trace from the Chillicothe area at 5 p.m. on Thursday in the regional semi-final at Lancaster High School. The regional championship is set there at noon on Saturday.
