George S. "Sammy" Van Dyke

Funeral services for George S. "Sammy" Van Dyke, 89, will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel. Interment to follow at the Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery in Thornville.

Mr. Van Dyke passed away Saturday, April 5, 2008, at New Albany Care Center. He was born Dec. 25, 1918, in Thornville. He attended The Ohio State University and was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps 555th. He was honorably discharged as a master sergeant, decorations including the Air Medal and the Bronze Star. He retired with The Ohio Operating Engineers Local 18 as a master mechanic.

He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Florence; children, David (Barbara Parker) Van Dyke, Danny (Linda) Van Dyke and Debbie (Jim) Dominguez; grandchildren, Christopher Van Dyke, Jimmy, Sara, Michael and Catey Dominguez; and nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ira and Esta Cooperrider Van Dyke; and brothers, Gene Van Dyke and Ira "Jack" Van Dyke Jr.

Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Schoedinger Northeast Chapel, 1051 E. Johnstown Road, Gahanna.
