Roger Jefferson Winegardner

Roger Jefferson Winegardner, age 81, of Thornville went home to his Heavenly Savior early Tuesday morning, April 1, 2008, with his wife of 62 years by his side at Autumn Healthcare, Somerset.

He was born on August 6, 1926, in Rushville, to the late Raymond Jefferson and Mary Mae (McAfee) Winegardner. As a youngster he grew up in a farming family and pursued that love for farming himself most of his adult life. He was very much a steward of the soil and was dedicated to leaving it better than he found it to benefit all those that followed. Roger loved the life cycle associated with the birth of livestock, planting and harvesting. Roger worked part time at factories in the area, and was a retired employee of Roper Manufacturing.

He enjoyed gardening, walking in the woods and hunting mushrooms. In his retirement years, watching college sports, especially basketball, was one of his favorite pastimes.

He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Thornville. His love of family and treating people fairly were values he held closely.

Roger is survived by his wife, Margaret A. (Gordon) Winegardner, children Sue (Jim) Sturgeon, of Somerset, Richard (Debra) Winegardner, of Thornville, Diana (Wayne) Wilson, of Thornville, grandchildren, Lori (Bryan) Tussing, Jason (Alicia) Sturgeon, Jeff (Jamie) Sturgeon, Amy Winegardner and Ryan Wilson, great grandchildren Wyatt, Taylor, Sydney, Hannah, Amanda, Kaitlyn, Justin and Jayden, sister, Sally (Ben) Baker, brothers, Joe (Joyce) Winegardner, Robert (Rosie) Winegardner, sisters-in-law, Dorothy Winegardner, Doris Shrider, and brotherin law, Lewis (Mary) Gordon and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and life-long friends, Roland (Marie) Foster, Lee (Stella) Potter, Archie (Evelyn) McCullough, and Dorothy Wasem.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one infant child, brothers, Stanley, Merle, and Gerald Winegardner and sister, Rose Bresler.

We will all deeply miss his quick wit, sense of humor, his competitiveness when playing cards, and his ability to recall times gone by.

Friends may call Friday, April 4, 2008, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Boring-Sheridan Funeral Home, Thornville Chapel.

Service will be at Grace Lutheran Church, Saturday, April 5, 2008, at 10 a.m. with Pastors Jeff and Patty Morlock officiating. Burial will follow at Zion Ridge Cemetery, Thornville.
