Bobby "Bob" Vest
Services for Bobby "Bob" Vest, 73, of Millersport, were Nov. 3, 2007, at Sheridan Funeral Home, Lancaster with Pastor Dr. George Winters officiating. Burial followed at Floral Hills Memory Gardens.
Bobby passed away Monday, Oct. 29, 2007, while doing one of the things he loved: riding his tractor, doing chores on his Thornville property that is the home for his grandson's family. Bob was born March 27, 1934, in Jumping Branch, W.Va., to the late Charles Preston and Glada Mae Vest.
He had a hardscrabble but happy childhood in the mountains and hollows during the Depression and World War II. He attended Shady Springs High School, Beaver, W.Va. As a teenager, he drove coal company trucks to help support his parents, brothers and sisters. He served in the U. S. Air Force at Bryan Air Force Base, Bryan, Texas, during the Korean War. His skills as a mechanic and officers' chauffeur proudly earned him the rank of Airman 1st Class. After his military service, he returned with his young family to West Virginia. There he worked at Cochran's Mill in Daniels and Mabscott Supply Co. in Beckley. Bob followed his brother Bill to Ohio and started his career with DeLille Oxygen Co. as a route driver. He became the production manager for the company's Columbus facility and its seven statewide branches. He retired in 1998 after 38 years of service to DeLille.
Bob reared his family in Whitehall, residing there for 36 years. For the past 11 years, Bob, Nordeen, and their son, Dana, made their home in Millersport. He showed his care for his family and friends through work. He was a skilled auto and truck mechanic, welder, handyman and gentleman farmer. He was in his element when he could perform a job for someone. For example, he single-handedly deconstructed a coal camp house, rebuilt it, and expanded it as a home for his parents.
Bob is survived by loving wife, Anna Nordeen Cochran Vest; sons, Rodney Vest, of Lancaster, Dennis Vest and Diane Stadler, of Sugar Grove, Dale Vest, of Glen Daniels, W.Va., and Dana Vest, of the home; grandson, Shane (Toshia) Vest, of Thornville; beloved great-grandchildren, Lane and Makayla; sisters, Geneva Lucas, of Medina, and Christine (Bob) Dehart, of Beaver, W.Va.; brother, John (Linda) Vest, of Sugar Grove; sister-inlaw, Joy Fritz, of Daniels, W.Va.; brother-in-law, Dr. Bud (Anita) Cochran, of Centerville; and 23 nieces and nephews.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents; brother and best friend, Bill; sister-in-law, Billie Jean Worley Vest; brother-inlaw, Buddy Clarence Lucas; and daughters-in-law, Lynn Hochuli Vest and Cathy Cooney Vest.
