Earl Eugene Beer

Earl (Gene) Eugene Beer, age 64 of Thornville, entered into eternal rest Tuesday, June 12, 2007, at Pickering House Hospice & Pallative Care, Lancaster.

He was born on October 18, 1942, in Bellefontaine, to William and Ruth (Bryant) Beer. Gene graduated from Linden McKinley High School, completed two years at The Ohio State University, and one and a half years at Ohio Dominican College.

Gene was a member of the Columbus Police Department for 31 years where he retired on April 5, 1996. In his 31 years on the force, his job titles included: Patrol Bureau, Detective Bureau, Administrative Aide to a Deputy Chief, promoted to Sergeant and assigned to Patrol, Sergeant Internal Affairs Bureau, Sergeant Vice Bureau, Sergeant Narcotics Bureau, Sergeant Uniform Patrol, and instructor at the Police Academy. He was a member of Drumms Lutheran Church. He was proud of his involvement in politics and Gene ran for sheriff in FairfieldCounty.

Gene is survived by his children, Robin (Debbie) Beer, Marianne (Chad) Ruwe, Andi (Mark) Smith and Kayla Beer; grandchildren, John, Caroline, Emily, Ethan, Dani, Marki, Brittnay, Mike and T.J., and best friend Kathy L. Beer; numerous cousins and friends; and many buddies and friends on the Columbus Police Department.

Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Jackie Overstreet.

His funeral was June 18, 2007, at Drumms Lutheran Church with Reverend David A. Bugh officiating. Burial followed at the Reid Cemetery, Rushville.
